About the customer
Our customer is an engineering company that focuses on improving productivity in production processes as its core activity. In addition, this customer designs and builds prototype machines. The end-customer for this project is a producer of mineral wool insulation, such as insulation shells for pipes. These are used to insulate pipes, mainly in the petrochemical industry.
The quality of a pipe shell is expressed as the insulation value, also known as the lambda value. An improved pipe shell production machine has been developed in response to market demand and increasingly stringent European energy standards Together with our customer and the end-customer, VHE developed a prototype pipe shell production machine that produces a more consistently wound pipe shell. More consistent winding is important as it increases the insulation value. In addition to this primary objective, the production speed had to remain identical and the new machine had to offer greater accessibility for operators and production and maintenance engineers. Other requirements included the use of server technology and compliance with the end-customer’s in-house standards relating to engineering and construction.
We developed a control system based on a WinCC HMI application, a Siemens PLC control arrangement and Lenze servo technology. A WinCC client/server application is used to operate the machine so that the machine’s status can be also be monitored remotely via the network. Thanks to the recipe menu, the machine is capable of producing many different product types.
All of the drives required for winding a pipe shell are equipped with Lenze servos motors to allow complete control of all aspects of the winding process. In order to achieve the required degree of accessibility, the machine is an ‘open’ design where the server movements are not connected to each other via mechanical linkages but via a master/slave synchronisation arrangement in the Lenze controllers. All the servo shafts work in unison to wind a perfect pipe shell. The electrical drawing package was produced in Elcad in accordance with Rockwool’s standards.
